An Antique Beautifully Engraved Silver Gilt Vermeil Posy Holder.
Before Sanitation and Concerns with Personal Hygenie, Posy Holders were Carried to Superstitiously Ward off Disease or to Camouflage the Unpleasant Smells of the Street.
These Posy Holders were Usually Shaped like a Small Vase and would Hold a Small Bunch of Sweet Scented Flowers (Posy or Tussie-Mussie).
Later in the 19th Century they were Roamanticized as a Fashion Accessory for Young Ladies to Hold Flowers Brought by Courting Gentleman Callers.
To Show Her Acceptance of Him She Skewered the Flowers into a Posy Holder with a Long Pin and Wore the Holder to a Dance Ball.
It was Attached to Her Hand by a Chain and a Ring so that She Could Dance Freely.
